The concept and practice of open education is still relatively new and CSU is now an active player in this space. This introductory session will discuss the multifaceted open learning and open educational arena including: processes (what is open? why is learning now open?); practices (who is open? what is the local and global outreach?); and platforms (how are open courses designed and where can you find them?). Presented by Julie Lindsay, Val Peachey and Leanne White from the u!magine Open Pathways team.

This session shifts the ‘What is open?’ discussion to ‘Becoming open’. We explore the continuum of increasing openness and the dimensions of open education practice in terms of networking, teaching practice, values and designing for learning. We also explore the framing of open pedagogy through the balancing of privacy and openness, developing digital literacies, valuing social learning, and challenging traditional teaching roles. We draw on examples of our experiences with CSU Open Pathways courses, and highlight issues that may challenge academics in becoming open.
